Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is one of the common treatments for varicose veins. A sclerosing solution is injected into the target site where the varicose veins are present. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel causing the vein to turn into scar tissue and fade.
Ultrasound-guided glueing of the vein (VenaSeal)
Similar to ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, we use a fine needle and catheter to inject a solution into the problematic veins. In this instance, we use VenaSeal, a glue-like substance which causes the veins to stick together and collapse permanently.
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
Using ultrasound for guidance, a fine wire and catheter is passed into the vein requiring treatment. We inject a detergent substance, which acts to denature the inner lining to collapse the vein and prevent blood from passing through it.
Avulsions
Used for larger varicose veins, an incision is made over the bulging varicose veins and through fine instruments these veins are ‘avulsed’ (meaning to pull or tear away). The vein is then removed through an open surgical technique.
