Do I need a GP referral to make an appointment?

It is a requirement of Medicare that in order for specialist consultations to be rebated patients require a current referral. You can see the doctor without a current referral but will not be able to claim from Medicare.

  • Referrals from Specialists last for 3 months.

  • Referrals from GPs last for 12 months, unless an “Indefinite” referral is provided, in which case the referral will, in theory, never expire.

We are also available for consultations and treatment without a referral however Medicare rebates will not be available for these appointments.

Do I need to have a scan prior to my appointment?

A venous scan is recommended prior to any appointments regarding varicose veins. This will help your specialist in assessing your condition and treatment. Our staff can assist you in organising this through our sister company, Highlands Vascular.

What will my initial consult involve?

At your initial consultation your specialist will note your medical history, assess your scan results and your varicose veins. During this consultation your specialist will discuss what treatments will work best for your condition.

Can I fly after varicose vein treatment?

The general recommendation is that you can fly domestically 2-3 weeks post-treatment and long-haul 6 weeks post-treatment. However, if you plan on travelling please discuss this first with your specialist as these recommendations can vary.

Will I need to wear compression stockings after treatment?

You will be required to wear compression stockings after your treatment. Your specialist will guide you through your post-operative care.
